Beniamino Gigli vol.3
The complete Victor recordings (1929-32)
Volume 3 completes the invaluable complete survey of the tenors output
for Victor - among the many songs, I especially like the marvellous May 1932
recording of Simons Marta. Along with Volumes 1 and 2, this
is a must.
... devoted to Giglis recordings between 1921 and 1932, the period
when he was at his vocal prime... he had one of the most beautiful tenor voices
ever heard, with an innate sensitivity to the shape and sound of a phrase, and
these songs and arias are quite wonderful.
This extraordinary release from Romophone, presenting us with the singer
in his youthful prime... And what a voice! Utterly secure, round and resonant,
pure and unforced, with evenly produced lines, an exquisite mezzo voce and a
liquid legato - it remains one of the vocal wonders of all time.
The voice of this most expressive of great Italian operatic tenors, more
admired for its intense lyrical qualities than any other, comes through marvelously
well in Mark Obert-Thorns expert transfers... you will have to buy all
three volumes yourself and indulge in their sheer luxury!
Gigli is one of the greatest tenors who ever lived. He possessed a great
technique, a prodigious instrument, innate musicality, superior memory, direct
communication with audiences and that elusive quality that some call angel.
These sets all magnificently cover the recording activity of Beniamino
Gigli, both in Europe and America, more than any tenor, he was the successor
to Caruso. No Italian tenor of his generation quite compared with Gigli in the
magic quality he could give to a song or aria, both in his colouring of tone
and in the warm-hearted magnetism which marked all his singing. Excellent transfers
by Mark Obert-Thorn. (***)
