Lieder recordings (1930-38)
Lieder by Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms
Elisabeth Schumann, soprano
The German soprano Elisabeth Schumann (1888-1952) began her career at the Hamburg Opera, and was especially admired in operas by Mozart and Richard Strauss. In 1919 she became a member of the Vienna State Opera, where she remained for twenty years. She appeared at Covent Garden 1924-31, and was a special favourite with London audiences. Schumann was also highly regarded as a Lieder singer, performing frequently in recitals with Richard Strauss as her piano accompanist. Renowned for her penetrating interpretations, she wrote a book about the German Lied and was an inspiring teacher. This CD features her complete pre-war HMV recordings of Lieder by Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms. In addition to all the published recordings, this set includes several previously unpublished items.
