Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893)
Pique Dame (The Queen of Spades)
Opera in three acts after Pushkin, sung in Russian.
This release of
Tchaikovsky\'s Pique Dame (The Queen of Spades), sung in Russian, is the
latest in the Ponto series celebrating the art of Julia Varady.
Although one the most accomplished sopranos of her generation, she is
little represented on disc. This live recording is designed to
complement the relative few that she has made in the studio. Previous
releases in the series include Verdi\'s Aida (PO-1028) and La Traviata
(PO-1042). The cast also includes the famous tenor Vladimir Atlantov
and the lamented mezzo-soprano Elena Obraztsova, whom together sang in
Pique Dame several times at the Bolshoi Theatre. In the bonus track you
can hear Julia Varady as Agathe in von Weber\'s Der Freischütz.
