For some unfathomable reason the official discography was always
rather indifferent to Magda Olivero, one of the most popular and admired singers
of the 1900s, and quite a phenomenon as far as artistic longevity and mastery
of interpretation. Time, however, did the Piedmontese soprano justice: thanks
to her flawless technique and constant practising, in 1994, at the distinguished
age of eighty-three, she was able to stun the world of opera with a recording
of excerpts from her favourite work, Adriana Lecouverur.
This double CD set features a rare and wonderful live recording
of Tosca in which Oliviero shows all of her artistic sensitivity. Her personal
interpretation of the Puccini heroine is completely different from that, highly
celebrated, of Maria Callas, yet equally convincing. A double-CD every opera
lover ought to have in their library.
