Lazar Berman
Plays Franz Liszt and Sergei Rachmaninov
Lazar Berman, piano
Live concert recording, Milan, 29th April 1976
On 29th April 1976 Lazar Berman gave, in Milan, one of the most extraordinary
concerts of his career: a performance of Liszt\'s 12 Etudes d\'exécution
transcendante which the people who were lucky enough to hear it will never forget.
What had the critics in awe was undoubtedly Berman\'s programme: all of Liszt\'s
12 Transcendental Studies was a feat which only a few illustrious pianists had
attempted before. But they were even more stunned when they saw the way Berman
achieved his goal: after two hours of performance, after Rachmaninov\'s Six Moments
Musicaux and - in the second half of the programme - Liszt\'s 12 Studies without
interruption, the pianist, showing no sign of fatigue, generously gave the audience
a series of very virtuosic encores, concluding with a spectacular Orage by Liszt.
This double CD set contains all of that splendid concert, in a recording of
exceptional sound quality.
Ample liner notes included.
