Jascha Heifetz
Plays Beethoven and Spohr
Concerto works
Jascha Heifetz, violin
Boston Symphony Orchestra, Charles Munch
RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, William Steinberg, Izler Solomon
Recorded 1951-55
Jascha Heifetz, an unrivalled violinist for the poetic quality
of his interpretations, recorded Beethoven’s Violin Concerto more than
once, not always, however, to optimum results. In his 1941 recording with Toscanini
he sounds indolent and - incredible to say - occasionally not perfectly in tune.
Neither of those flaws, though, can be perceived in the present recording, made
in 1955 with Charles Munch. This conductor, apparently, brought out the best
in Heifetz, who gave, that time, an interpretation of Beethoven’s masterpiece
worthy of competing with the best ever published. Also featured in this CD are
Beethoven’s two beautiful Romances for violin and orchestra, Op. 40 and
Op. 50; and the Concerto No. 8 in A minor ”in modo d’una scena cantante”,
a masterpiece written in 1816 by Louis Spohr, Beethoven’s contemporary.
Track List:
Beethoven: Concerto in D Major Op. 61, Romances Nos 1 and 2
Spohr: Concerto No. 8 in A minor
