Recorded in New Orleans in April 1950, this selection from Verdi’s Un
Ballo in Maschera brings us the chance to listen to one of the world’s
leading singers of the twentieth century, Jussi Björling in one of his
own favourite, and most congenial, operas. The extraordinary elegance, the splendour
of a sung line that is always perfectly controlled yet magnificently expressive
emerge all the more strongly in this recording which has all the warmth of live
performances of the Fifties – a period in which opera was still an integral
part of the musical culture of Europe and America.
