Guido Cantelli conducts Wagner
NBC Symphony Orchestra, N.Y. Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra
At the beginning of his brief but shining career, Guido Cantelli (1920-1956) won the admiration of Arturo Toscanini, and was by many considered his worthy heir. Unfortunately, a tragic plane crash near Paris’s Orly airport, on 23rd November 1956, cut his life short a year earlier than his old mentor. A stubborn perfectionist endowed with the temperament of a great artist, Cantelli has left us a small number of live and studio recordings. The present CD, entirely dedicated to Wagner, features five recordings, four of which live, of exceptional artistic and musical importance, enhanced by superb recorded sound.
