Orchestra e Coro del Teatro alla Scala
Recorded live, Milan 1954
1954 was the year in which Maria Callas definitely established herself as an operatic star. That year the Greek soprano sang almost exclusively in Italy, with many appearances at Milan’s La Scala, where she debuted in two of her most famous roles, Alceste, in the homonymous opera by Gluck, and Giulia, in Spontini’s Vestale. This double-CD set features the memorable evening of 4th April 1954, when Gluck’s Alceste was premièred in Milan. The accurate sound clean-up of the original master has restored all the unforgettable polish of the voices.
